Enhancing a Visualization — What the Most Profitable Companies Make Per Second
2018/W5: What the Most Profitable Companies Make per Second
It’s curious to know how much do the top 25 wealthiest companies make per second. It is usual to measure the profit monthly or quarterly, it is interesting to check on how much profit lands in the bank for every tic of the clock.
As a part of Udacity Data Visualization Nanodegree, the main objective of this project is to put together all the skills and knowledge gained in the course to improve a visualization and make it more interactive and appealing to the public.
The first place to start was selecting an existing visualization. After browsing through MakeOverMonday I found that I could improve the graph made with the What the Most Profitable Companies Make per Second data.
Comments on the data biases:
- The data does not include which all parameters are included while calculating the Net Profit which leads to data collection bias.
- Bias in data insight — The lack of information on which days the profits are made i.e. is the per second profit on weekdays or weekends or combined. We are solely dependent on the data given on Per Second without knowing for which particular time is the profit.
The original visualization :

Challenges with the Original Visualization:
- Too many colors, could be distracting for color blind person.
- The values are printed very small and hence it is not clear unless seen closer.
- It does not speak of the overall profit of the company.
- We need to look over the circle in different angle to read values.
- Main things the above graph is not interactive and we can’t filter out the industries.
My Recommendation — Create a detailed explanation dashboard conveying like a story.
- To make it simple for viewers, bar graphs are easy to read for non technical audience.
This provides the users an overview of each industry with their total per second profit.
The graph indicates that Technology/Internet industry leading all the segments and earning $4517 every second. The second place is taken by Banking/Finance with $3664 and the third place is taken by Telecommunications Industry.
2. Comparing the 2016 Net Income with Per second Profit.
This is important to understand since Net Income is income after all the expenses management expense. So from the graphs we can observe that Net Income and Profit Per Second is going almost hand in hand.
3. It is important to see the Per Second Profit of Companies clearly with their peers.
This clearly indicates the profit per second and it also simultaneously compares them with others through the size of their squares.
The above graph clearly highlights that Apple has the highest Per Second Income and it is about $1444.
4. Overall view of the story through a Interactive dashboard.
Visit the below link to check out the interactive dashboard.
Improvements made:
- A overall Story has been build before jumping into conclusion.
- The graphs are made very simple, A bar graph has been replaced with the complex Pie chart.
- A clear explanation for each graph has been given.
- Key points are highlighted for each of the graph.
